The 2022 Teacher Appreciation Day Google Doodle

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Day in the US, today’s vibrant Google Doodle highlights the variety of contributions teachers make to children’s lives.

Two holidays honor the influence of teachers in children’s lives in the United States. National Teacher Day was first established by Congress in 1953 as a single day of the year to honor teachers. In 1984, the National PTA founded Teacher Appreciation Week, which is observed in May. National Teacher Day was moved to the Tuesday of the first full week of May in 1985 when these two holidays were aligned to be observed together.

A teacher has a variety of responsibilities on any given day, including teaching a range of courses, providing counseling and direction, or simply acting as a role model for their students. Students may remember teachers who did a good job for the rest of their lives.

Google’s homepage today showcases Teacher Appreciation Day artwork as part of their contribution to celebrating teachers across the nation. Erich Nagler, an artist, used the 2022 State Teachers of the Year as his inspiration while creating The Doodle . The National Teacher of the Year program and Google for Education both gave each of these educators an given a $5000 award rating.

Meeting with such an enthusiastic and perceptive group of instructors during the Doodle development process was a pleasure. In order to inform the Doodle artwork, the State Teachers of the Year submitted overall themes of their responsibilities and specific instances from their classrooms. Even they put pencil to paper to scribble down their suggestions for the artwork’s design. I remember one of the quotes from our brainstorm: “Teachers empower pupils with tools to communicate their ideas.” So I tried to set up a still-life with all these different teaching aids surrounding the chalkboard and teacher’s desk.

The Doodle depicts a typical classroom setting, with a focus on the teacher’s desk, which is stocked with materials for various disciplines as well as unique drawings of thanks from the pupils. The letters of Google are built from common educational tools like handwriting examples, a globe, the atomic model, and a musical staff along the back of the Doodle. In a clever move, the Doodle’s accent colors are all taken from Google’s own four-color logo.
