{Resolution: Updated} Calls are suspended due to a significant Verizon outage, particularly on the US West Coast.

Customers of Verizon are experiencing a significant outage with the network service provider. Users are experiencing service failures in many regions of the United States, despite the fact that the majority of the outages appear to be happening on the West Coast.

Verizon outage reports began pouring in on DownDetector starting around 3:05 p.m. ET. Since then, it appears that the poor service is affecting an increasing number of users, since many are unable to make calls. Interestingly, your consumption shouldn’t be affected if you want to send text messages over Verizon’s network. It appears that calling as a whole is the focal point of the outage.

Update 4/21: Verizon attributes the problem to a fiber problem in Verizon’s core network, according to reports from CNET . Since then, the problem has been fixed, so customers shouldn’t experience any continued interruptions. Restarting your device should resolve any network issues that are still there for those who are still having trouble.

Verizon experts found the problem and fixed it, so most impacted customers should now experience business as usual.

Over 20,000 separate faults had been reported to DownDetector by day’s end on April 20 in a number of states along the US West Coast and in several areas of the East.

My own calls failed to hold for longer than three seconds after the other end picked up every time I tried to make one here on the West Coast. This occurred three times in a row before attempting again on a different device. Both devices are connected to the Visibles network, but only one can make a successful call. The outage also affects Visible because the network depends on Verizon’s coverage.

Though many are undoubtedly impacted, the widespread outage doesn’t seem to have a clear explanation. Users appear to be affected from Arizona to Seattle, with a few users here and there reporting they are unable to make or receive calls. Many users are turning to Twitter to try and solve the problem. Data and messaging should continue to function normally in the interim.
