It appears that the Pixel 6a won’t support Google Camera’s “Motion Mode” images.

The upcoming Pixel 6a offers a lot of value, but it appears the phone won’t support a function shared by its flagship brethren. New information suggests that the Pixel 6a won’t allow photography in Motion Mode.

Evidence from the Pixel Tips app implies Google will not permit Motion Mode on the Pixel 6a, as uncovered by Android developer Kuba Wojciechowski via XDA-Developers .

Given the 6a’s first-generation Tensor processor, information concerning Motion Mode in the Pixel Tips app is coded to surface on PIXEL 2021 EXPERIENCE devices, but expressly excludes the codename bluejay. Everything we’ve heard in recent months, including when we initially reported the bluejay codename back in November of last year, is consistent with the bluejay codename.

The specifics of this discovery weren’t initially made public, but our APK Insight team was able to identify the precise place in the code where bluejay is prohibited, supporting Wojciechowski’s results.

In light of this, it seems obvious that the Pixel 6a won’t likely feature Motion Mode in the Google Camera app. Motion Mode, which was first introduced on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, allows users to highlight movement around a topic by using special effects. In our review of the Pixel 6 Pro, we weren’t especially delighted with Motion Mode’s performance, but it was still a useful addition.

It’s unknown why Google might not be including Motion Mode on the Pixel 6a, although it’s probably because of the outdated camera hardware as previously discussed. The chip inside is the same, after all.
