Early hands-on with the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro and comparison to the Pixel 6 series {Video}

Along with a face unlock status update, today’s early hands-on of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro gives us our first really good look at the hardware and how it stacks up against the model from last year.

This hands-on is provided by Unbox Therapy , who was able to obtain prototypes of both phones in the color Obsidian. Google has only made a few still images and brief videos of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro available since May during I/O 2022.

The Pixel 7 (code-named Panther) contains 8GB of Samsung LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of storage, as can be seen on the bootloader screen. GVU6C is the Pixel 7, and more precisely the Sub-6 model, as we predicted on Tuesday in response to the FCC filings.

The Pixel 7 Pro (Cheetah, model GE2AE with mmWave), like previous year’s phones, supports 12GB of RAM, but the unit featured in the video has 256GB of storage. Both have product revisions labeled as EVT1.1 or engineering verification test , respectively, indicating hardware from the early stages of development, albeit slightly later.

The Pixel 6 is taller than the Pixel 7, which has smaller minimal bezels, as we will see when we next compare the two phones side by side. When using calipers to measure width, the Pixel 6 measures 74.92mm and weights 205 grams as opposed to 73.20mm and 195 grams for the Pixel 7.

Compared to the Pixel 6 Pro’s 9.02mm body thickness and 11.50mm camera bump, the Pixel 7 Pro’s body is 8.82mm thick. The new one’s width is 76.68mm as opposed to the old one’s 75.89mm. Even though this isn’t the final hardware, the weights of the 7 Pro (209 grams) and the earlier variant (208 grams) are extremely similar.
