Google updated both the desktop and mobile Chrome apps’ icons with version 100 in late March. interview today with the redesign team reveals some fascinating information regarding the procedure.
For instance, the browser icon for speed prior to the 2008 debut included a rocket ship with a crimson lightning bolt and flames displayed flying above Earth.
But ultimately, our team decided against the physical rocket ship and settled on a design that appeared approachable and clickable while yet evoking the spirit of Google.
Moving on, Chrome received a new logo in 2022 since Google decided it was time for a modernisation after eight years since the last update. Additionally:
It was crucial that the Chrome symbol seemed more adaptive, natural, and contemporary regardless of the device you used, as we also observed that the visual design of contemporary operating systems was getting more aesthetically distinct.
Google experimented with solutions that further deviated from the general form we’ve been using for the past 12 years, but the finalized Chrome icon makeover is more of a tweak than anything else. Today, some investigations were shared:
In the experimental stage, we tested a variety of concepts, including rounding corners, experimenting with different geometries, and deciding whether or not to divide the colors with white.
Many of them choose to use varied degrees of partitioning to separate the elements while sticking to the four Google colors and circular composition. Other designs, including one with rings that resembled both The Doughnut and Pentagon buildings and one in the shape of a triangle, were highly abstract. The red gradient icon, meanwhile, is perplexing, if not sinister.
Although it contains too much whitespace, the hollowed-out version was kept for Chrome Beta for iOS. (The blueprint-like style is a wink at Apple’s developer-oriented software.)
