As Google Meet approaches a new milestone, Google Play Games surpasses 5 billion downloads.

Google Play Games, the company’s center for Android gamers, has now been downloaded from the Play Store more than 5 billion times. Google Meet has also reached a new milestone.

The goal of Google Play Games, which was first introduced in 2013, was to compete with Apple’s Game Center on the iPhone by consolidating all of your phone’s games in one location. Additionally, it provides a few social features, brings achievements to Android games, and recommends new games to play.

Recently, the app has been pre-installed on the majority of Android smartphones; this has undoubtedly helped to Google Play Games’ billions of installations. With the app now indicating that it has been downloaded more than 5 billion times, up from the previous estimate of more than 1 billion, it appears that Google Play Games has reached another significant milestone over the weekend.

Google Play Games has started to alter how users and developers engage with it in recent years by shutting down its multiplayer server APIs. Along with the launch of Play Games for Windows, which brings Android games to Windows 10 and newer PCs, Google also unveiled a new Play Games logo last year.

Additionally, Google Meet has passed a new record for Play Store downloads. Google Meet has reportedly been downloaded more than 500 million times, up from just 100 million.

The increase in downloads coincides with a challenging period for Google Meet. Google is planning to discontinue that specific Google Meet app in the future weeks or months, and for the majority of users, the software has already been renamed to Meet (Original).

Instead, the functionality of that video conferencing software has been transferred to the app formerly known as Google Duo, along with the Google Meet branding. The Google Play Store still lists the outgoing app as Google Meet and its replacement as Google Duo despite that ongoing renaming.

In contrast, Google Duo, the new Google Meet, has been downloaded from the Play Store over 5 billion times. That is ten times more downloads than Meet (Original) has at last accrued.
