Widespread rollout of the Material You website redesign for Gmail {U}

In addition to promising a tablet overhaul for later this year, Google is introducing more widely rolling out Gmails Material You redesign, which was first introduced last month on the web.

Update 8/2: Both personal and business Gmail accounts now show the Material You redesign to many more users. Along with the left sidebar becoming bolder and the default background changing to blue, other telltale signs include the Compose FAB (Floating Action Button) changing from a pill to a rectangle with rounded corners.

To return to the original interface, hit the settings gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen. Gmail’s Apps also allows you to delete Chat, Spaces, and/or Meet.

Original post from 7/27: The business is highlighting the cohesive aspect of having Gmail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet in a single, unified experience in today’s public push. Google will start to roll out for all Gmail users who have enabled Chat after the preview earlier this year.

You’ll notice a simple, efficient approach to switch between programs that you may personalize to suit your needs.

You can choose which apps, such as Gmail alone or a combination of Gmail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet, you’d like to flick between using Quick Settings on the left side of your window.

The key adjustment is the addition of a main menu for each Workspace app on the left, while chat notification bubbles will now show at the bottom of this strip. Depending on the program you are using, the Collapsible panel (the column over) will display folders and labels for Gmail and people/previous chats while you are in Chat.

In terms of what’s new, Google is putting a filter button next to the page switcher/arrows in the top-right corner of your inbox. To focus results, a row of search chips is dropped down. These filters are already there in search today, but Gmail is now showing them to you without requiring you to type a query.

Messages (Chat), Mail, or Spaces Anytime: From: Sender To: Recipient time frame has a connection: Using filters for images, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc. Is not read Delete calendar invites Even for those who have been utilizing the Material You redesign for the past few weeks, this feature has not yet been made available.

The redesigned buttons in Material Design 3 have a rectangular shape with rounded corners rather than a pill, like Compose, and a blue background to replace the previous white one (though themes are also available, as seen below).

Last but not least, Google hinted at some forthcoming features for this year:
better emojis, additional accessibility features, an enhanced tablet user experience, and much more.

The first feature should be Android-focused and make use of a navigation rail, but considering the popularity of Gmail for iPad, it will be fascinating to see if it also receives these changes.
