Why is sapphire glass so unique in the Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro?

The Galaxy Watch 5 is merely the latest in a long line of excellent smartwatches made by Samsung. At first sight, the Galaxy Watch 5 doesn’t seem to offer much more than its predecessor in terms of advancement. If you look around, you’ll see that the Galaxy Watch 5 uses sapphire glass rather than gorilla glass. What is the difference, then? This article will delve a little deeper into that.

The Galaxy Watch 5 is an exceptionally good smartwatch that includes some of the best sensors and features out there, at least on paper. The Galaxy Watch 5 features Samsung’s BioActive Sensor chip for improved activity monitoring in addition to the same Exynos W920 processor as the Galaxy Watch 4. With an additional 10 hours or more of power, the Galaxy Watch 5 offers a significant improvement in battery life over the previous model. On the other hand, the Watch 5 Pro is anticipated to have a battery life of 80 hours, which is a significant improvement.

SAPPHIRES GLASS: WHAT IS IT? In addition to these modifications and similarities, the Watch 5 line has undergone a significant upgrade that applies to both the standard Watch 5 and the Pro. The displays in these new wearables are sapphire crystal displays, also known as sapphire glass. Sapphire isn’t really a glass, more of an engineered crystal that has been made to be extremely robust and colorless, making it ideal for wearable displays.

A sapphire sheet is very durable. Sapphire is rated as having a Mohs hardness of 9. For comparison, the hardest substance known to man is diamond, which is ranked at 10. The surface of a sapphire crystal display would need to be scratched by something at least as hard as it is.

Naturally, excellence has a cost. It costs more to engineer, produce, and incorporate sapphire displays into the Galaxy Watch 5. Sapphire is the more expensive option among all the displays available, including Gorilla Glass. Despite this, there isn’t a significant price increase between the $279 beginning price of the Watch 5 and the Watch 4s.

While Gorilla Glass still dominates the smartwatch industry, Apple uses sapphire screens in its titanium and stainless steel Apple Watches. Of course, a sapphire Apple Watch will cost you at least $500. It’s impressive that sapphire is even used given the price tag the Galaxy Watch 5 series carries.

GALAXY WATCH 5 BENEFITS OF SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL As previously noted, sapphire crystal is incredibly robust and scratch-resistant. Sapphire is undoubtedly gives it a run for its money no matter what Corning Gorilla Glass Victus could accomplish on the Galaxy Watch 4. The Galaxy Watch 5s face is far more difficult to damage because of the structure of the crystals, making it more difficult to dig into, but we haven’t yet been willing to test this out.

In general, wearables are prone to a lot of abuse. You might feel a little uneasy just moving around in congested locations, on constrained sidewalks, or on the brick walls of buildings because you are aware that it only takes a tiny movement to rub your watch’s display against those rough surfaces. A common defense used is that Gorilla Glass survives falls more frequently, which makes sense given that a harder glass can’t bend as much and will shatter more easily. Although it is conceivable, the Galaxy Watch 5 series is less susceptible because it is unlikely to ever simply fall off your wrist. If you hit something with it, sapphire will likely take the full brunt of the impact and will absorb the shock as a whole. Sapphire glass is a fantastic fit for smartwatch applications.

Sapphire is a game-changer for the Galaxy Watch 5 as an improvement to the last Galaxy Watch 4. More peace of mind when wearing something that is an extension of yourself comes from better scratch resistance. While sapphire’s durability on the Galaxy Watch 5 has yet to be seen, we anticipate it will perform well in place of Gorilla Glass.
