Prior to a larger overhaul, the Play Store for tablets and Chromebooks receives Material You.

Google unveiled a significant Play Store revamp for large screen devices at I/O 2022. The Play Store for Android tablets and Chromebooks is gaining some Material You flourishes until that is complete.

The mobile app was upgraded with Material You back in October. Only recently have those modifications begun to filter down to the large screen experience, which uses a distinct UI. Specifically, the bottom bar is replaced by a navigation drawer in landscape mode (though thats still present in portrait orientation).

The biggest Material You change is that the rectangular, rounded-corner search box has been replaced with a pill-shaped field. The box and the highlight indicating the part you are currently viewing have Dynamic Color applied in the meanwhile. On unsupported devices, blue is utilized as the accent color rather than green. Last but not least, portrait now uses the new, taller bottom bar.

Material You has not yet been applied anywhere in the app. Users can anticipate a condensed navigation rail and major feeds that display more than just broader carousels in the future. We shall exploit side-by-side cards instead. It’s funny how the appearance differs from the recently revamped website somewhat.
