Google has brought its Pixel phones back to India after a two-year absence, and the Pixel 6a made its debut there on the same day as it did everywhere else. With a price that is generally regarded as being far too exorbitant, Google may have jeopardized the success of its own launch.
The Google Pixel 6a was initially revealed at Google I/O 2022, albeit a far later release date was specified. Pre-orders were scheduled to start on July 21 and ship on July 28. It costs $449 in the US, $150 less than the Pixel 6 regular model.
The Pixel 6a also includes the same package in India. 5 years of software support, 6GB of RAM, and Google Tensor powering the system. However, the value of that package is substantially lower in the nation.
The Pixel 6a costs demands 43,999 in India, which is directly equivalent to $550 USD. Cardholders of Axis Bank receive a 4,000 discount right away.
Although slightly higher costs for Google products in India are obviously not unusual, the company’s smartphones, which compete in a market that is far more crowded, may suffer as a result. According to Harish Jonnalagadda points out of Android Central, such pricing puts the phone out of reach of potential customers. The cost of AAA3 and AAA4 has also been criticized by several enthusiasts.
It’s also not difficult to understand why the Pixel 6a isn’t particularly competitive in India.
The Motorola Edge 30 Pro is being offered by Flipkart for about the same price, but it comes equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, a 120Hz display, and a substantially larger battery. The Nothing Phone (1) has also recently debuted in the nation for a far lower price of 32,999. It has more RAM, a better display, and better cameras, as well as a commitment to software support that isn’t half awful.
India is a sizable smartphone market with a lot of room for Google to expand. It is exceedingly shortsighted on Google’s part to not only not offer competitive pricing, but to inflate that pricing to the point where the phone is no longer competitive, given all of the competitors in the area.
Although it’s nice to see Google back in India, ideally conditions will improve.
