In a thorough hands-on, the LG Rollable demonstrates how close it was to launching as well as the rear display.

LG was teasing the release of what would have been the first rollable smartphone to hit the market prior to shuttering its mobile division in 2021. Unfortunately, the LG Rollable never made a public appearance, but in a recent hands-on video, we get a thorough look at the product that might have been.

LG Rollable was almost finished. A Korea-based YouTuber acquired the LG Rollable in what appears to be a virtually finished state, complete with retail-ready packaging and other components. The phone’s packaging features a smart branding and design, as well as a charger and documentation for the gadget.

This video gives us a better look than ever at what LG had put together when it comes to the hardware as a whole. Under its cameras, the device’s back contained a fingerprint sensor, and there was even a window through which you could see the rolled-up display.

It appears that this would have been LG’s first smartphone to replace the physical power and volume buttons with capacitive keys.

From the front, the Rollable, which has a tall display without any cutouts, resembles a typical smartphone when it is rolled up. However, there are some obvious modifications all around the frame. The largest alteration is that the speaker and USB-C connector were moved to the left side of the device. It’s an intriguing decision, to say the least, but one that was undoubtedly required to make the rolling screen possible. Additionally tucked inside the bezel surrounding the display is the selfie camera.

How about the extending screen itself? In this demonstration, the rolling mechanism appears to be exceedingly smooth, and it becomes immediately clear how valuable it might be. There is significantly more room for the content when displaying a YouTube video, and letterboxing when in full screen is barely noticeable. Additionally, the greater size succeeded in activating the tablet UI.

As seen in the video’s settings app at 4:32 , LG also added some really attractive animations to its software while extending the screen.

THE LG ROLLABLE ALSO HAD AN INGENIOUS REAR DISPLAY What’s particularly cool is that the LG Rollable would have allowed you to use the display while it was rolled up, complete with a fully functional camera UI and a few choice widgets.

The entire movie is really worth watching because it demonstrates how close LG was to releasing this product. It’s a real shame that it will never be released, and no one else appears to be even close to releasing a smartphone with this design.
