Google Maps will include routes optimized for hybrids, EVs, and other energy-efficient vehicles.

With a focus on electric cars, hybrids, and other fuel-efficient vehicles, Google Maps is getting ready to increase its selection of fuel-efficient routes.

Regarding APK Insight: We’ve decompiled the most recent version of an app that Google put on the Play Store in our APK Insight post. When we decompile these files—known as APKs for Android apps—we can find numerous lines of code that allude to potential future features. Remember that Google might or might not ever deploy these features, and our understanding of what they are might be limited. However, we’ll try to give those that are nearly finished a chance to demonstrate how they’ll seem if they do ship. Read on with that in mind.

Google Maps started providing an alternative method for driving directions last year. Whereas a navigation program normally optimizes for the shortest trip time, Google Maps started providing routes that would be more environmentally friendly and economical with fuel, even choosing that route as the default if the ETA is identical.

However, not every vehicle exhibits the same behaviors or uses the same techniques to maximize fuel efficiency. While gas-powered cars are still all too ubiquitous on American roads, there are also an increasing number of hybrid, electric, and quite a few diesel-powered cars. It should go without saying that the most efficient route for an electric vehicle will differ from one for a typical ICE vehicle.

To that purpose, the most recent beta update for Google Maps, version 11.39, has provisions for you to define the kind of engine you’re now using. Google Maps will adjust your navigation based on your choice of gas, diesel, electric, or a hybrid vehicle to determine which option will result in the most fuel or energy savings.

Even after this option is released, it doesn’t appear that you will be forced to choose a specific kind of engine. Additionally, there will be a choice to change the engine type in the app’s settings if necessary.

Given the company’s environmental conscience and the success they may have thus far had with automatically choosing the energy-efficient route, the shift makes a lot of sense for Google Maps. Drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles will probably still need to wait a few more weeks to witness the changes Google Maps will make to their journey, as the feature is only recently starting to emerge in beta testing.
