Google attempted to add a favicon to every desktop Search result in 2020 after adding one to every mobile result in 2019. Google is currently testing a change to mobile Search that makes use of huge favicons and gives site names more prominence.
The site name is displayed next to these substantially larger favicons, which are housed in a white circle in the top-left corner. The path is still present, but it now appears below the circle in a secondary position. The other page only displays a path when there are many (grouped) results from the same website, which is also the practice in use today.
Even without the circle, these big icons are noticeable and are also included in Google Discover for Android. It changes how favicons and site names show at the bottom of cards in the content feed, following cover images and headlines.
However, given that modern phone screens are relatively crisp, this new design for mobile Search is badly undermined by the fact that the great majority of favicons on the web are quite low-resolution.

While the Discover adjustment is more restricted, the change in Search has been tested (particularly with Incognito queries) for the past few weeks but has not yet been broadly disseminated out.
In 2020, Google attempted to add favicons to desktop search results. The corporation changed its strategy after complaints that the design made each result like an advertisement. At the time, Google claimed that because favicons make it easier for users to easily identify the source of information on mobile devices, they are well-liked by users. The size should only further that goal.
