A disassembly of Google’s $449 mid-ranger has made its internals visible ahead of the Pixel 6a’s launching the following week. There are numerous manufacturing similarities between this year’s Pixel 6 and the design of previous year’s Pixel 6.
Although the Pixel 6a continues Google’s usage of clips to also secure the screen, heat is required to melt the glue in order to begin the disassembly (via PBKreviews ). You’ll see a rounded square cutout for the proximity and ambient light sensor immediately to the left of the front-facing camera, underneath. Its position on the screen is lower than the Pixel 6 Pro’s.
To remove the midplate, which contains a vibration motor attached to the bottom and a sizable piece of graphite film to help with heat dissipation, you must first remove a protective film and a few screws. After the pull tabs are removed, you can access the battery, albeit more prying is needed and two sets of tabs might be helpful.
The iFixit repair guides simply advises utilizing isopropyl alcohol:
Only the top and bottom portions of the battery are covered in adhesive; the center is not. The transparent plastic strip around the battery’s center is not particularly helpful while removing the battery. Open the adhesive seal on it, and you’re welcome to pull it out from under the battery for simpler handling.
Nevertheless, PBKreviews observes that removing the battery was considerably simpler with this device compared to the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, suggesting that Google may have made advancements since the previous year.
While you examine Tensor, the charging port is regrettably soldered to the main board (left rectangle). Finally, as seen in the top cover image, the black plate is removable (with heat) from the frame and we can see how its flexible plastic or what Google refers to as a 3D thermoformed composite back.
