Before becoming CEO of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki had discussions about becoming Tesla’s COO.

Before she was appointed CEO of YouTube in 2014, Susan Wojcicki had discussions about becoming Tesla’s COO and Elon Musk’s deputy.

Wojcicki reportedly held discussions about joining Tesla as COO, according to an upcoming book ( Like, Comment, Subscribe: Inside YouTubes Chaotic Rise to World Domination by Bloomberg’s Mark Bergen about the video service) (via CNBC ).

For the first year following its establishment in 1998, Google’s office/headquarters were located in Wojcickis garage in Menlo Park. A year later, she began working for Google as its first marketing manager and eventually rose to the position of senior vice president of advertising and commerce.

Wojcicki has been searching for a more senior position prior to being chosen CEO of YouTube. Although she is referred to as being devoted to Larry Page and Sergey Brin, it is unclear how far those discussions with Tesla advanced.

According to Bergen, Page had already started planning his own resignation and had decided to transfer control of Google to Sundar Pichai, a trusty lieutenant. In a conversation, Laszlo Bock, Google’s HR director at the time, allegedly stated that by shifting Wojcicki to YouTube, Page could more easily make room for his preferred successor.

Wojcicki would have provided Tesla with a capable day-to-day leader, much like SpaceX’s COO Gwynne Shotwell, who is well-known for running the space company.

The book, which will be available starting on September 6, also describes how, during the 2015 restructuring, there were conversations within YouTube to become a separate Alphabet firm. However, it was decided that the product was too ingrained in Google’s operations and infrastructure to be removed. Even today, Google still owns YouTube.

The fascinating, behind-the-scenes story of YouTube’s technology and business is first told in the book Like, Comment, Subscribe, which also explains how it assisted Google, YouTube’s parent company, in achieving unfathomable power. The story is narrated by the people who run YouTube and the famous stars who were produced on its stage. It is the tale of a media revolution and an industry gone wild, and how a simple notion that let anyone to broadcast online and generate money set off a chain reaction of fury and addiction that spun out of control and altered the course of history.
