The majority of us typically track our sleep via a smartwatch or fitness tracker, but the ingenious software Sleep as Android was the first to do so by using the phone’s sensors to provide a snapshot of your sleep quality. It has already been verified that Sleep as Android will support the Google Health Connect app.
launched in the year 2010 during the Android 2.3 Gingerbread period. Since its release, the app has been used as an alarm clock that wakes you up in the optimal state rather than at a precise time, as well as to track your sleep cycles and ailments like snoring. Since Google Fit has infamously neglected the metric outside of the most recent Nest Hub, Sleep as Android has also been readily available on Wear OS for quite some time, serving as one of the only methods of tracking sleep on many watches.
Google’s newest health program for Android, Health Connect, now includes Sleep as Android.
During Google I/O 2022, Health Connect was announced as a mechanism to centralize health data.
The app’s goal is to transfer health information between services. Weight information from a smart scale app into Google Fit, step monitoring from Samsung Health into Fitbit, etc. There are a ton of possibilities, and if done well, it seems like a smart idea.
However, all applications that want to use the service right now must manually implement support for it. Numerous apps, including Google Fit, Fitbit, Samsung Health, Leap Fitness, MyFitnessPal, and Withings Health Sync, have already received confirmation from Google that they would add compatibility. The final one is included in the app and has already added support.
In its most recent versions, Android also includes functionality for sleeping. The beta version of Sleep as Android v20220707 allows access to Health Connect. With that upgrade, Sleep as Android became visible in Health Connect’s Connected Apps area.
The program can only read and write sleep data, as shown in the image above.
Of course, since Health Connect isn’t yet a fully functional app, this doesn’t mean much right now. But it’s obvious that progress is being made.
