Numerous Material You embellishments were added to Gboard as a result of Google’s most recent design updates. Gboard themes have recently undergone a minor upgrade that allows them to now cover more Android phones’ navigation bars.
On Pixel phones, or even OnePlus/Oppo smartphones, this UI behavior is nothing new. For a more seamless visual experience, the background of this narrow strip is made to match the color scheme of the Gboard theme, which is extended to the nav bar. The change is barely seen on dark/light themes, but is most noticeable on colorful backgrounds, notably Dynamic Color.
Depending on the system theme, the navigation bar (gesture or 3-button) might remain black or white on other phones, creating an odd mismatch.
This was recently updated by Gboard such that many more Android devices now have navigation bars that are tinted. Gboard began prepping for this transition back in May, according to site friend RKBDI .
The Samsung (Android 12) devices we examined today that are using it are live (12.0).
New versus old behavior
